Have you ever found yourself praying for healing, but also resisting the very process that brings it?

I didn’t realize I was doing it for years. I asked God to change me, restore me, fix the broken places inside — but only if it didn’t hurt too much. Only if it didn’t expose anything. Only if I could still stay in control.

But healing and control don’t go hand in hand. Healing asks us to open our hands, our hearts, our history — and surrender them all.

If you’ve been asking for transformation but feeling stuck, here are five signs you might be resisting what God is trying to heal:

  1. You keep revisiting the pain but avoid confronting it. You talk about it. You vent about it. But you never sit still long enough for God to actually go deep. Healing isn’t just about expressing the wound — it’s about allowing God to clean it.
  2. You spiritualize avoidance. You say, “God’s in control,” but deep down you’re just dodging a hard truth. Healing sometimes requires confession, counseling, and hard conversations. Denial dressed in Scripture is still denial.
  3. You stay busy to stay numb. The calendar is packed, your to-do list never ends — but quiet terrifies you. Why? Because in silence, the pain surfaces. Healing can’t happen until you stop running from yourself.
  4. You minimize the impact. “It wasn’t that bad.” “I should be over it by now.” These are the lies we tell ourselves to avoid the discomfort of honesty. But you can’t heal what you won’t name.
  5. You resist surrender. You want healing on your terms. You want to keep your boundaries, your coping mechanisms, your timelines. But God heals best when we trust Him completely — even with the ugly, broken, buried pieces.

The truth is, healing isn’t a surface-level process. It’s holy surgery. And like any surgery, it involves exposure, discomfort, and vulnerability. But on the other side? Wholeness. Peace. Freedom.

That’s what I discovered when I finally stopped resisting and started surrendering. The moment I waved my white flag and said, “God, I trust You — do what You need to do,” things began to shift. Not overnight, but undeniably.

🗓️ That’s why I wrote White Flagging: The Surprising Power of Winning by Surrender. It’s not just a book — it’s a guide through the very journey I took. And I believe it will bring healing to many hearts.
