“Be still, and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10)
It’s a beautiful verse, often quoted but rarely obeyed. For a long time, I misunderstood what it meant to be still. I thought it meant doing nothing, sitting quietly, waiting idly for something to happen. But in my personal journey, I discovered that God’s version of stillness is not about inactivity. It’s about trust.
Stillness is surrender in motion. It’s choosing peace over panic. It’s silence that trusts, rather than silence that sulks. It’s an intentional heart posture that says, “God, I’m not going to run ahead of You. I’m going to wait with You.”
I used to fill every silence with solutions. If there was a problem, I was solving it. If there was tension, I was fixing it. If there was an uncertain future, I was planning three backup scenarios. My idea of control gave me a false sense of peace. But God began to show me that my busyness was not faith — it was fear in disguise.
When I finally heard God whisper, “Be still,” it wasn’t an invitation to do less — it was a command to trust more.
In the quiet, God started peeling back the layers of my self-reliance. I realized I had made an idol of my own strength. I trusted my plans more than His promises. I was worshipping productivity, not practicing faith.
Stillness forced me to deal with what was underneath — my anxieties, my doubts, my impatience. But the more I stayed in that posture, the more I discovered that God meets us in stillness. That’s where He speaks. That’s where He reveals. That’s where He restores.
One of the most transformational seasons of my life came not from a breakthrough, but from a pause. From choosing not to rush ahead. From choosing to rest in God’s timing, even when it felt like He was taking too long.
Stillness is one of the purest expressions of surrender. It says, “I don’t have to make something happen. I just need to make space for God to move.”
And guess what? He always does.
